About me

As a retired educator, I seek opportunities to explore artistic expression. I have worked on developing my artistic skills and enjoy figure drawing, portrait drawing, and some painting. In pursuit of further educating myself in art history, I have travelled to many great museums and seen numerous exhibits.

Six years ago, I attended a one-day clay sculpting workshop with Melanie Furtado in Victoria, B.C. and what started as a hobby soon became an obsession. I have sought out and completed a variety of sculpting courses:

  • 8-month Foundations of Sculpting Course with Melanie Furtado and various courses in figurative sculpting.

  • Sculpt Italy in 2015 for ten days working with Gabriele Vicarri in Pietrasanta, Italy and several seminars in Victoria, BC with Gabriele.

  • I worked with Linda Lindsay in Victoria, taking several anatomy courses, including an Ecroche course where we sculpted a bust of a skeleton with ligaments, muscles and bones.

  • I also completed several courses in facial expressions and completed several self-portraits

  • I attended a course in France in May 2018 to sculpt a portrait bust. In 2018 and 2019, a 10-day symposium sculpting the torso, I took several 5-day courses with Gabriele Vicarri and Melanie Furtado and David Hunwick.

My first bronze was juried into the Oak Bay Arts Alive 2017 and was awarded reserved runner-up for people’s choice. “Joy of Life in Balance” was displayed in 2018-2019 on Oak Bay Avenue in Victoria, BC, then at Castlegar Sculpture Walk 2019 for 2020; the City of Castlegar has leased it. For the last two years, my bronze has been leased and displayed at a Veterinary Clinic in Nelson, BC. “Joy of Life in Balance” was juried into the Penticton Public Sculpture Exhibition and selected to be displayed in 2021-2022. The second edition of this bronze, “Joy of Life” was displayed in Nanaimo and was juried into the Sculpture Walk at Muffelo Sutton Park.

I have completed over thirty projects in fired clay and bronze, of which some have been shown, including pieces that have been purchased by the MacTavish School of art and several private collections. I am currently exploring new mediums, and my new work, “My Friend,” is my first attempt at using Ferro-cement.

The Dreamers (2024)

Joanne Helm embarked on a transformative journey to Italy, where she sculpted her captivating The Dreamers Series. Currently at a foundry in Pietrasanta, Italy, these pieces await bronzing before making their way to Victoria, BC. Stay tuned for their arrival, as each piece embodies Helm's exploration of the human spirit and the power of imagination.
